#BookTour :: The Maharaja’s Fake Fiancée by Alisha Kay - @alishakayauthor #Romance #RomCom

12:00 am 0 Comments

A scandal-averse Maharaja.
A free-spirited actress.
What do you get when throw them together and add a fake engagement to the mix?
Depending on whom you ask, you either get a match made-in-heaven or a royal disaster.

Nivy Sharma knows exactly what she needs - the freedom to be herself and follow her passion. Guess what she doesn’t need? A tailor-made husband.
When her meddlesome mother tries to throw her into the arms of a mom-approved suitor, Nivy runs the other way.
Right into the arms of the man who shattered her heart.
His Highness Veerendra Singh can recognise a pain-in-the-ass when he sees it. Especially when it falls into his arms.
Even if said pain-in-the-ass has legs that go on forever and lush lips that just beg to be kissed, Veer vows to run the other way. As he did once before...
But, when the marriage-minded princess of Tejpur sets her sights on him, Veer runs back into Nivy’s arms to propose a fake engagement.
When 'fake' starts to feel very real, Nivy and Veer have to decide what is important… long-held prejudices or the chance for a life with the only person they've ever loved.

Will this be their second chance at love or will their broken past ruin their hope for a shared future?

NIVY

I told myself that the valet would be very shocked if I turned around, grabbed His Hottiness by the collar and kissed the living daylights out of him.
So, I closed my eyes and ignored the shudder that wracked my body. It was just a coincidence. He couldn’t have known that I had a thing for bikes.
And not just a small thing, but a ginormous THING that had led me into making some very questionable choices during my time in Mumbai. The kind of choices that made my poor mother threaten to take out a large life insurance on me just in case I broke my neck falling off the back of my biker boyfriend’s two-wheeled monster.
“And if you die, you duffer, I’ll never forgive you. But I’ll retire in style on that insurance money, just you wait,” she had wailed when she had heard about my biker boyfriend and his bike for the first time.
I was used to my mother’s twisted proclamations of love, so I didn’t take her seriously, but I did promise to wear a helmet and come back home in one piece. Thus, it was safe to say that when Veer’s souped-up Harley roared up the drive, my lady bits decided that it was time to sit up and take notice.
Veer shot me a knowing smile and grabbed the keys from the valet. Another valet rushed out with two helmets, and handed them over as ceremoniously as if he was handing out the Devgarh crowns.
I turned mine over to check for precious stones.
“What’s wrong?” asked Veer, throwing his own black helmet over his head and tugging on the strap.
I made a face.
“I’m very disappointed with the royal helmets. I expected a Cartier sarpech at the very least,” I said, referring to the turban ornament that the Maharajas of yore used to wear.
“At least it’s purple. Goes with your theme for the evening,” he replied, with a nod at the skull on my top.
His eyes lingered at my chest, and my nipples did a happy dance. A visible one, going by the way his gaze turned hot enough to scorch me.
I cleared my throat and gave Veer the directions to the dhaba.
He watched as I struggled with the strap of the helmet for a few seconds, and then, came over to show me how to pull it tight. His fingers grazed the skin under my ear and I forgot how to breathe.
As soon as he moved away, I took in a big gulp of air that turned into a silent gasp when he threw a leg across to straddle the bike.
Yowza! I’d always had a soft spot for bad boys with bikes. Who knew that a good boy with a bike could beat them all hollow?
I wanted to call the date off and hide under the bed until I had all these naughty feelings under control, for if I didn’t, I’d find myself married to my fake fiancé in the time it took my mother to snap her fingers like an evil fairy godmother, without even saying Bippity-boppity-boo.
And Veer would hate me for life. Or at least until his over-paid team of lawyers tortured me on a rack to get an annulment. And I would still be nowhere close to my dream.
So, I took another calming breath, and threw my own leg across the seat and climbed on. At first, I held on to the back-rest behind me, but the minute Veer revved the engine, the bike shot forward, and if I hadn’t wrapped my arms around his waist, this Humpty-Dumpty would have had a great fall.
I tried to stay upright, but the movement of the bike had me scooting forward until I was plastered against Veer’s back like a second skin. Every time I inhaled, my breasts brushed against his back, and my nipples sent me happy messages that I resolutely ignored.
It was impossible to make conversation over the roaring of the bike, so I just closed my eyes and enjoyed the ride. Veer picked up speed as soon as we left the city and hopped on to the highway. The sound of the engine revving went straight to my crotch and I bit back a silent moan.
If we were really engaged, I’d have made him stop the bike in a dark cul-de-sac off the highway and climbed around to face him, which would have resulted in us getting arrested, to be honest. So, I just had to keep telling myself that this was fake.

Damien

London

The first thing that hits me when I open my eyes is that revolting hospital smell. I hate it! I’ve always hated it! The word hospital ought to come patented with that typical nausea inducing antiseptic smell.
The persistent beep of a monitor makes me turn my head to the green lines on its screen. My eyes widen as I scan my surroundings. Bloody hell! I’m on a hospital bed, connected to a heart rate monitor and dozens of other tubes and I’ve no fucking clue as to why.

“Thank God! You’re awake. You’re finally awake.” A familiar voice speaks from my side.
It’s my best friend Gabriel! He’s standing beside me, his expression worried and relieved at the same time. Dark shadows surround his eyes and his clothes are wrinkled. I try to sit up but a sharp pain in my head stops me. A loud wince escapes my lips and Gabe immediately squeezes my shoulder.

“Don’t, Damien, please. Just lie down. I’m going to fetch a doctor.”

I shut my eyes and hesitantly touch my head. Sure enough, most of my head is wrapped in bandages. Why am I here? What’s happened to me? I can’t for the life of me comprehend what’s going on. My mouth opens and closes but no sound comes out of my dry throat.

Gabe returns with a doctor, Dr. McKenzie from what I can read on his badge. He has a white mop of hair and a somber expression on his face. He shines some light in my eyes and checks my pressure while asking some preliminary questions. How do I feel? Does it hurt anywhere else? Can I feel my arms, my legs? Can I move them etc, etc? I give him answers with nods of my head.

After he’s done, I take a deep breath and try to speak again, but what comes out is a choked sound. The doctor hands me a glass of water. I take a sip and try again.

“What happened to me?” I ask, my voice hoarse from un-use for God knows how long.

Gabe is staring at me, a frown knotted on his brow. “Damien, you were in a car accident. Don’t you remember?”

An accident? When was I in an accident? Fuck! My mind is a huge empty blank.

“I don’t recall being in a car accident,” I bark out, “and I don’t have patience for this nonsense. I need some answers, NOW!”

“Damien, you need to calm down,” Gabe says.

The doctor takes a step closer to me. “What is the last thing you remember?” he asks.

I take a moment to think back. “It was my birthday. I was at a coffee shop waiting for Gabe.”

“What year is it?” Gabe asks me.

“Gabe…” I start to say but he raises a hand to stop me. “Answer me Damien.”

“2015”

His mouth drops open and he turns a helpless look at the doctor.

“Can someone tell me what the bloody hell is going on?” I finally snap. “What is wrong with my head and why the hell am I on this Godforsaken bed with a dozen machines attached to me?”

The old doctor shakes his head at my outburst but Gabe is smiling. The angry glare that I throw his way does nothing to wipe his grin. He’s the only one I know who has always been unfazed by me. A fleeting memory pops in my mind of someone else, but I can’t catch it. It’s gone before I can exhale on my next breath. Ignoring it, I turn to the doctor waiting for a response from him.

He takes the glass from me and puts it on the table next to me before he says, “You’ve been in a severe accident that has injured the back of your brain, which means that you may have lost some part of your memory. How much, we’ll have to conduct tests to ascertain. But as of now, it seems that you’re suffering from some form of amnesia.”

I give him a fierce look.

“That can’t be true,” I scoff.

His lips flatten and he crosses his arms in front of him. “With due respect, Your Grace, that is true because the year is 2020 and you seem to be missing five years of your life. I’ll be back to conduct a few tests once you’re settled in with this information.”

Harun stood and hugged his brother. Then he turned to Tillie. His gaze was steady, but his eyes were cold. “Forgive me if I cannot give you a similarly warm welcome, but my wife and I have not yet recovered from the brutal attack on our daughter.”
“Harun.” Marianne Benson spoke softly, but her gaze was fierce. “I believe Hope and the Agency have settled the matter. You don’t need to pursue it further.” She turned to Abdul and smiled. “I am pleased to see you, Abdul.” She cocked an eyebrow. “Though for a while there, the rumor was that you had gone rogue and were dancing with the devil.”
Abdul laughed. “I may dance with the devil occasionally, but that does not mean he owns my soul. I am still slaving away for the Queen.” He smiled at Mari. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”
“Well, it’s hard to ignore a summons from the Queen, and when your husband has a plane, it is much easier to respond quickly.” Mari motioned to the chairs at the table. “Please sit. Let’s get down to business. It was made clear that time was of the essence.”
Everyone sat, and Mari walked over to a control panel set into a console. She pushed a button, and a whiteboard lit up. “As you know, after we rescued the people off Flight Eight Seven Zero and The Mars were prosecuted, Dianna and Anders interviewed them extensively at Guantanamo Bay. We were able to collect a considerable amount of information on the organization, its members, and its financing.”
Twelve photos appeared on the screen. “These are the current members of Marwolaeth I’r Frenhines. Six are incarcerated at Guantanamo, three have been released, and three are recruits.”
Tillie leaned forward and studied the faces. It always amazed her how normal terrorists appeared. There was nothing in their faces to indicate that they were evil. Most were smiling in their photos. However, the tell was in the eyes. They were stone cold.
Mari pointed at the photos of those recently released. “These three have been fairly quiet. We could not detect any significant communication or contact between them and the new members, which makes me think this may be a new group that merely adopted the name.” She brought up a few more photos. “These gentlemen are believed to be the financiers of the new order.”
Tillie studied the group and gasped. “But that’s a former member of Parliament.”
Harun nodded. “And someone who wishes to dissolve the Monarchy. Apparently, he has put his money where his mouth is.” Another screen popped up. A bank statement.
Abdul cleared his throat. “Fifty million pounds? That’s pretty significant. Has this been verified?”
Harun gazed at Abdul. “I’m afraid so. We have transfers to the account, bank acknowledgments, and proof the newest members of The Mars have been drawing on these funds.”
Mari pulled up another screen. “Though we were a little puzzled by their purchases until now. We thought they had gone into farming.” She pointed at an invoice. “Everything you need to raise a cow, or in this case, a human cow.”
Tillie hugged herself and shuddered. “Lady Annabelle is most certainly in their sights.”
Mari gazed at her husband and nodded. Harun opened a file he had set in front of him. “Apparently, it is much worse. There were also several purchases for the care of an infant. Either Lady Annabelle is pregnant, or they intend to impregnate her.”
Abdul slammed his fist on the table. “Bloody hell. A royal baby? The Queen would move heaven and earth to protect her own blood. What a crafty way to manipulate her for their own purposes. She would be damned no matter how she responded. That could end the monarchy.”
Tillie stood. “I think I’m going to be sick.”

They won the auction for Lady Annabelle, barely.

Anders turned off his phone and frowned. “The number I was given to arrange for pickup has been disconnected.”

Dianna sighed. “And the auction has been expunged from the Dark Web. It appears Lady Annabelle’s owners have taken a powder, with Lady Annabelle in tow.” She gazed at Tillie. “Did they withdraw any funds from your Black Card?”

Tillie nodded. “The full amount. They got their money. Almost two million U.S. dollars. Why take a runner?”

Anders shrugged. “We had no guarantee they would deliver Lady Annabelle. Hell, they might not even have her. It could all have been a scam. It’s not like we can run to the police and report this. We’re not dealing with upstanding citizens here. They are criminals.” He nudged his wife. “At least Dianna can get your money back.”

Tillie buried her head in her hands. “What am I to tell Her Majesty?”

“Nothing, yet,” Anders said. “Let’s have some of my people check out Abernathy Farms in the U.S. Maybe we can find her and snatch her back on our own. Unfortunately, given the nature of the other bidders, I’m pretty sure we’re not the only ones looking for her, and that worries me. Especially with The Mars back in the picture. We narrowly beat out their bid.”

Several years prior, The Mars, short for Marwolaeth I’r Frenhines or Death to the Monarchy, hijacked a plane with several high-profile Americans on board. They had used Chinese technology to cloak the plane, making it invisible to radar and other tracking systems. Eventually, the plane was buried in a Wisconsin cornfield, the passengers still alive and in their seats. Dianna and Anders had been among those who rescued them, shortly before The Mars blew up the plane.

Dianna gazed at him. “I thought most of The Mars were still at Guantanamo.”

Anders shook his head. “Apparently, some of them have been released. The minor players.” He sighed. “When will we learn that with terrorists, there are no minor players. Everyone has the potential to become the next Bin Laden. What I want to know is where they got their money. We bankrupted them. They must have a new backer.”

“Which makes them dangerous, again.” Dianna shook her head sadly. “On the plus side, we know what they look like. We can pick them out in a crowd. On the negative side, they know what we look like. We won’t be of much help there. We’re better off finding Abernathy and taking it from there.” She gazed at Tillie. “But this is your case. We don’t need to be involved. It’s totally up to you.” She grabbed Ander’s hand. “I am perfectly happy heading out for my second honeymoon.”

Tillie steepled her fingers. “This is my assignment. I am authorized to do whatever it takes to bring it to a successful conclusion. However, as you can imagine, this is a rather sensitive mission. If word of this leaks out, it could have a serious impact on the Monarchy. So, the fewer people involved the better.”

He’s a powerful duke. She’s his uncle’s ward. They have forever been at war, until one night, one masquerade, and one kiss…

Lara Ramsay is no stranger to scandal. As the orphaned daughter of a British colonel and his beloved Indian wife, whispers follow her everywhere. Not even the protection of the formidable Duke of Wolverton, a man she can’t stand, keeps the gossips at bay.
The audacious Lara has driven Tristan Wentworth, The Duke of Wolverton, to distraction since the day his uncle took her in—and he’s quite certain doing so is her favorite pastime. After catching her and his younger sister at a salacious masquerade, he’s had enough scandal and issues a marriage ultimatum: find a husband within six months or one will be chosen for her.
Unfortunately, no one in the ton appeals to her. Except, perhaps, the duke himself. The battle of wills has only just begun, and when Lara kisses him, their fate is sealed.
Sometimes even the most proper duke needs to break the rules to win the heart of the woman he loves...

Quotes from Dare to be a Duchess:

“Here, right at this moment, I’m giving you an ultimatum: Find someone from the ton to marry in the next six months or I will choose someone for you.” – Duke of Wolverton

“Well then the plan is simple, ‘Divide and Rule.’” – Lara Ramsay

“You’ll be surprised that a gentleman with the best intentions can behave like a rake when faced with temptation.” – Duke of Wolverton

“I think, Wolf, that you go on and on about my undesirability and my unattractiveness as a way to convince yourself more than me. The fact is that you kissed me because I am desirable and I am very attractive indeed.” – Lara Ramsay.

“You know very well that I’m accepted in the ton, albeit grudgingly, thanks only to you. No man wants to marry me, and I don’t want to marry any of those men.” – Lara Ramsay.

Read an Excerpt from Dare to be a Duchess:

Wolf crossed his arms and glared at Lara. Despite being at fault, she was as unrepentant as ever. Her absolute nonchalance drove him mad, always.

“It is my concern. Getting into trouble is second nature to you, so I’d be lying if I said that it gave me any pleasure to be the one to help you out.” Wolf scowled at her. “Paxton is not a fool. He only has to think closely as to whose identity I would desperately want to protect and then remember your dark hair and he will come up with your name. You truly have no sense at all.”

“Well then you shouldn’t have bothered coming to my aid,” Lara retorted. “I could have handled the situation perfectly well by myself.”

Wolf put his hands on his hips. “And how may I ask would you have done that?”

“I’ve heard that a well planted knee on a delicate part of a man’s anatomy would normally do the trick.”

His eyebrows shot up. “You’re crazy to think that you could have deterred Paxton that easily.”

Lara merely stared at him, her head held high, further fueling his temper.

“What, nothing to say?” he snapped. “Which brings me back to my first question. What in the world are you doing here in this depraved place?”

Lara continued to watch him with those deep blue eyes, her lips set in a mutinous line. Her lack of response irked him even more.

“Answer me,” Wolf demanded, his tone sharp.

She met his gaze head on. “We had no inkling this place would be so bad. And nothing untoward has occurred, so stop shouting at me.”

“Unbelievable,” he growled. “Do you know how bad this place can be for two innocent girls like yourselves? Behind their masks and costumes, the men here have only one thing on their minds when they look at you, and you, as usual, don’t care that you could be completely ruined if discovered, let alone taken advantage of, in this den of vice. You are wild and irresponsible and you give no thought to your actions or the consequences thereof. And you

brought Anne here? Just because you don’t care about your reputation doesn’t mean you can play fast and loose with hers.”

Lara’s eyes blazed with fury. “Anne is not a child. She is a grown woman who has a mind of her own.”

“And that is justification for you to come here?” Wolf countered.

“I, too, have a mind of my own,” she shot back. “And I do not appreciate you telling me what I can and cannot do.”

His nostrils flared. He was the Duke of Wolverton, one of the most powerful men in England. No one defied him. And yet this one woman stood against him at every turn. Why couldn’t she understand the potential danger for her or Anne here?

#BookBlitz :: The Maharaja's Fake Fiancée by Alisha Kay - @alishakayauthor #ComingSoon #RomCom

12:00 am 0 Comments

A scandal-averse Maharaja.
A free-spirited actress.
What do you get when you throw them together and add a fake engagement to the mix?
Either a match made-in-heaven or a royal disaster...

“Screw that. Just stand still,” said the lunatic, as she wrapped her arms around his neck and plastered her lips to his in a parody of a kiss.
Her head was tilted to the side, as if she was trying to look over Veer’s shoulder while kissing him. This was taking multi-tasking too far, fumed Veer. If she wanted to kiss him, the least she could do was do it properly.
He was tempted to take over and show her how it was really done. But, at the last minute, he remembered that his mother had raised him to be a gentleman. He sighed. And pulled away gently.
There was a sound behind him, and he turned around to meet the horrified gaze of one of the doctors from Aryan’s team. That mouth breather.
For his heartbroken expression, Veer realised that the kiss had actually been for his benefit.
The man opened and closed his mouth a couple of times before he turned and walked off in a huff.
“Thank you! And I’m really sorry to have done that to you, Veer. But the man just wouldn’t take a hint,” said Nivy, apologetically.
Veer could have left it at that. He could have turned around and walked away. But where was the fun in that, he wondered with a feral smile that had Nivy taking a step back, warily.
“We’re old friends, Nivy. You can kiss me whenever you like,” he said, with a wink.
The confusion on her was face made him very happy.
Veer knew he was not being fair. But he didn’t like being used without his permission. Besides, that non-kiss rankled.
He didn’t think he was a vain person, but the fact that this irritating girl - with the big brown eyes, lush lips and irresistible mole that he’d been trying to resist for years - thought that she could kiss him like that and dismiss him casually, drove him nuts.
He stepped closer and leaned into her.
“Want to try again?”
She gulped and he smiled.
He leaned forward, but she cocked her head to the side and looked over his shoulder.
“Umm, your mother’s walking towards us. Step back now,” she ordered.
“Is she alone?”
“No, Anika is with her.”
“How does she look?”
Nivy thought about it for a second.
“Determined,” she said.
Veer groaned and leaned his forehead against Nivy’s. He could feel the noose tightening around his neck. Until now, he had avoided spending too much time with Anika. But it looked like that was going to change.
“Umm, whatcha doing, Your Highness?”
“Trying not to cave,” he murmured.
“Mind doing that from a few feet away?”
Veer stood up straight and looked down his nose at her.
“Listen, missy. You just used me to drive someone away. I think it’s time for you to return the favour,” he ordered.
Nivy snorted.
“That girl is too smart to fall for a fake kiss,” she argued.
“Then, it’s up to us to make it look real,” he said grimly.
Before she could argue some more, he pulled her into his arms.
Her eyes widened in surprise and something else.
Veer leaned in and rubbed his nose against the side of hers.
“Will you help me, Nivy?” he whispered.
She nodded, her eyelids drifting shut.
He brushed his lips over hers fleetingly. Once. Twice. Then again.
After the third butterfly kiss, Nivy grabbed the back of his head and deepened the kiss.
Her lips parted and his tongue slipped in to play with hers.
Nivy moaned softly, the sound shooting straight to his groin. She wrapped her arms around his neck.
Veer groaned at the feel of her soft breasts pressing against his chest.
Behind him, there was a gasp. And then the sound of footsteps moving away rapidly.
Nivy pulled away slowly and Veer let her go.
They both cleared their throats and looked everywhere but at each other.
Veer was sure there was a logical explanation for why that fake kiss had turned into something way more explosive, but he couldn’t think of one at the moment. Not when his body was yelling at him to stop thinking and get back to kissing.
He looked around and saw Anika turning back to glare at them, as his mother dragged her away.

Chapter 1

Home sweet home, pours love but just drizzles appreciation!

Saro is my friend since school days. One evening, when I ran into her at Mount Road in Chennai, deciding to prolong our happy reunion, we proceeded to the Spencer Plaza to catch up. There, we met my boss, an American.

He noticed me and said ‘Hi’. I responded in kind, and introduced my friend.

Immediately, he complimented Saro, saying, “Your dress is lovely.” She was wearing a magenta-coloured silk sari with a black border. The sole reason for this incident was that the sari was really beautiful, and Americans are usually generous with their compliments.

Even though quite some time had passed since we had met my boss, Saro was visibly uncomfortable. She was not her usual bubbly self, either.  Only after my continuous, repeated insistence and queries of “What happened, Saro?” did she reply.

“When your boss complimented me, I could not even say a simple thanks!”

“Yes. I noticed. You could have thanked him”

“The thing is, I have never been praised so I did not know how to respond…”

That night, it was a long time before I could fall asleep. Is there only ‘one’ Saro who has ‘never been praised?’ There are a thousand Saros, Kamalas , Fatimas, and Stellas amongst us, who yearn for  appreciation.

Apparently, research shows that women’s chromosomal and genetic makeup craves appreciation and acknowledgment, more than men’s genetics do. Must probably be true.

“Darling… How does my new saree look?”

“Is it new… Superb!”

Did the husband even spare a glance at the saree, or did he say so as there was no other quicker way to end the conversation… God only knows!

“There is a difference in the rasam I made today… Did you not notice?”

“Really? For me it tastes the same, as usual.”

Following a new recipe suggested by a friend, boiling tomato and garlic along with lentils, mashing them all together, mixing with the tamarind extract, boiling it evenly before adding freshly crushed cumin and black pepper, and finally tempering with mustard seeds spluttered in ghee… all this effort only to hear ‘it tastes same as usual!’

A new hairstyle from a rare visit to a beauty parlour, a tastefully drawn peacock kolam, a special adai-avial tiffin made after poring over a different recipe from a book, a newly purchased green silk-cotton saree that had attracted at first sight, a reward gotten at the office… would any of this give us complete happiness, if not layered with praise from close family members?

Could the researchers who proved that ‘women’s chromosomes expect praise and appreciation’, not have also proven that ‘men’s chromosomes limit their ability to give out praise and compliments’?
