David helped Anna down after tying the mule, and followed her inside. A lanky man who stood behind a counter looked up from the hotel register as they entered. David nodded to the man, led Anna into the dining hall, and sat down beside her at a small round table. Like before, the room was nearly unoccupied. Three Union officers sat in the far corner, drinking whiskey and smoking cigars. Two men stood near the back of the room. One was playing a fiddle while the other attempted to sing a slow ballad in a low, baritone voice. The room was bright with sunlight, and lace curtains hung over the long windows. A thin, balding gentleman with an apron wrapped tightly around his waist appeared, pencil and paper poised in his hands.

“How do,” he said softly. “What would y’all like to order?”
Anna smiled up at him, but he only stared back.
“Well,” she began, “what is your specialty?”
“And more importantly, how much is it?” added David.
The waiter laughed. “More than you can afford, I’ll wager!”
David chuckled. “We have two dollars. Bring us whatever that provides.”
He glanced at his wife, who glared at him.
“It ain’t Confederate currency, is it?” the man asked.
“Silver,” responded David.
The waiter grinned and walked off into the kitchen.
Anna was still glaring. “The money you earned in prison?”
David nodded.
“You should hold on to that, sweetheart. We might need it for something important.”
He smiled. “You’re important,” he answered. “You said you needed to eat, and I’m starvin’. What could be more important than that?”
The musicians began to play another melody, and the couple listened to the lyrics.
 
“We shall meet but we shall miss him, there will be one vacant chair.
We shall linger to caress him, while we breathe our ev’nin’ prayer.
When a year ago we gathered, joy was in his mild blue eye.
But a golden cord is severed. And our hopes in ruin lie.”
 
David couldn’t help but think of the loss of his best friend. The lyrics saddened him deeply, searing his soul, rekindling the painful remembrance of discovering Jake’s lifeless body on the battlefield. He drew a heavy sigh, and took his beloved’s hand.
“It’ll be all right,” she comforted.
He nodded in confirmation, relieved when the song finally ended and the musicians broke into a lively tune.

Ma had planned an intimate dinner with the team, but I convinced her to expand her guest list considerably, and move the event from the dining room to the ballroom. With thirty other people around us, I could stay away from the golden couple of Devgarh General Hospital. Or so I thought.
Arshia kept seeking me out as if I was her new best friend, and Aryan kept staring at us nervously as if he was worried about what I might do to his precious, until he was called out for an emergency just before dinner was served. 
I was on my best behaviour, and even when she called me ‘sweetie’ and ‘darling’, I just smiled through gritted teeth and refrained from stabbing her with my fork.
I finally made my escape when she got cornered by one of the richest patrons of the Foundation and found an empty table close to a French window that led onto the courtyard. I was supposed to be on a low-cal diet, but Arshia’s jabs about how I looked so nice with a few extra pounds on me drove me to the buffet, where I piled my plate high with chicken chilly and noodles.
I had a pounding headache and when I settled down to eat, I found that I couldn’t eat anything. I was staring at my plate glumly, when Zombie sidled up to me, looking at my plate hopefully. He was on a diet, too, but I couldn’t bear to deny him when he gave me those starving puppy eyes.
I tossed him a piece of chicken and wondered if I should just tip the plate over the side of the table. Just then, Arshia came over and plonked her ass down on the chair next to mine.
“Finally,” she groaned, taking off her spike heels and rubbing her feet.
I smiled politely and picked up my phone.
Any idiot could have taken the hint, but Arshia was clearly on a mission to make me miserable.
“I don’t know why I torture myself with these horrible heels,” she whined, looking pointedly at my flat juttis.
I merely smiled and went back to reading my messages.
“Oh wait! I know why. It’s because Aryan loves how they make my legs look,” she giggled.
The smile froze on my face. Please God, no! I didn’t want to listen to this. But it looked as if I had no choice. Arshia was watching me like a hawk to see my reaction, and I refused to show her how much it hurt to hear these intimate details of their relationship.
“Great,” I said, with a polite smile.
“I guess I can tell you our secret because you’re close to his sister.”
She took a deep breath and made a show of looking around to see if anyone else was listening, and then leaned forward.
“We’re taking it to the next step,” she whispered.
My heart clenched, and I swallowed nervously. Surely she didn’t mean…
“His mother has invited my parents over for dinner this weekend. And they are planning to fix the date. For our wedding,” she said, faux-coyly.
A cold sweat broke out all over my body at the thought of Aryan marrying someone. Someone other than me, that is. But I had known that this day would arrive at some point. And there was no chance in hell of him ever marrying me. So I didn’t know why I was so miserable. I just was. Arshia stared at me calculatingly, and I tried to summon a polite smile.
Just then, Zombie moved away from me, and the table cloth in front of Arshia rose as he poked his head out from under the table to stare at her. She took one horrified look at his big teeth and yellow eyes and shrieked as if she had seen the devil. And then, she ran. Zombie gave chase and I ran after them to pull him back. And Aryan returned just in time to see his girlfriend go flying into the fountain.
The rest was history.

‘Don’t be under the impression that you are an exception because you saved my life,’ Rani Durga Moni Devi continued. ‘Didn’t I tell you yesterday that you need to be at least clean if not anything else? But look at you.’

Bidisha’s forehead scrunched even as she fisted her hands part in disappointment in herself and part in anger towards the man who was responsible for her current state. Bidisha looked at the man before her in annoyance. Her anger amplified when he gave her a smug smile even as the queen continued her tirade. 

Nobody had ever spoken to her like that. Though Bidisha had encountered rude men and women, she had always taught them a lesson if they crossed the line she had drawn. Bidisha was already having a one-on-one combat with Rani Durga Moni Devi in her mind and was mincing the queen with her sword in her world. She smiled at her thoughts, hiding her face when, in their imaginary battle, Rani Maa fell carrying her huge body weight. 

Suddenly, a pair of legs appeared before her and she knew instantly that it was none other than the mysterious man. Bidisha lifted her head.  

‘Did he see me smiling? This is not good. I should have been more careful before mocking the queen.’

The man took her in from top to bottom, then stretched a hand and moved her out of his way. He then walked out of Rani Maa’s chamber as if nothing had happened. The huge man in black was not only mysterious and rude but was also indecent, she concluded. 

Bidisha felt a flash of irritation and she glared at his retreating form. Her first mission, she thought, would be to dig out all the information she could about that man, once she got into the palace.

Shruti looked into his eyes to see if she could read anything. There was a storm of emotions looking back at her from those liquid-brown eyes. Shruti leaned forward. Jaideep lowered his head. His hair was a mess as it fell to his face, and he shook his head to get it out of his eyes. It was as if he had words on his lips that refused to spill when he opened his mouth.
‘What is it, Jaideep?’
‘It’s nothing, you’ve to believe me.’ He wanted to tell Shruti about the mendicant and his prophetic words, but he couldn’t bring himself to say it. ‘Now how are we going to get out from here?’ he said instead. He smiled a forced and toothy smile to make her believe.
‘Ok, you see that?’ she pointed her torch at the dark wall of the cave somewhere to their left. 
‘What am I seeing?’
‘Well, there is a crawl space there that will get us out of this chamber.’
She thought she saw his eyes widen for a moment. She wondered why.
‘I was too afraid to go down that,’ he admitted, reading her mind. ‘You are so brave.’
‘It might be very tricky considering your chest wounds and your injured leg. But it was large enough to crawl through.’
Jaideep nodded with an inert look of resignation. Shruti helped him up and was busy picking up all their stuff when he grabbed her just above the elbow. 
‘Listen.’
There was a faint crackling noise in the cave. 
‘What is that sound?’ Shruti asked, sounding hopeful. Maybe someone was drilling through the cave walls, looking for them? 
Jaideep’s eyes narrowed, and the corner of his lip turned down as he pulled Shruti and twirled her around; he was pointing at the place where she had shone her torchlight a heartbeat ago. 
Shruti’s heart stopped beating for a moment or more. There were sparkles of light near the mouth of the tunnel and the crackling became louder. Within seconds, it became a loud buzzing noise like that of a hundred angry bees. 
Shruti dropped everything she was holding and rubbed her eyes. There was no way this was happening to her in a rational and scientific world. 
‘You’re seeing this, right?’ she managed to whisper.
Jaideep started limping towards the tunnel. ‘No!’ Shruti caught him by the wrist and held him tight. Jaideep turned to look at Shruti. She looked scared, he looked determined. 
Both of them blurted the words simultaneously: ‘There is something I need to tell you!’ 
Even as they looked at each other and back at the sparkles, it self-combusted into smoke and in its place was an arrow! A flaming arrow!

She laughed, a bright sound in the dark night and Sid couldn’t stop himself anymore. He wanted to soak in the joy, the sheer light that beamed out of her. He leaned in close, closer than he should have but other than a slight widening of her eyes, Dani didn’t move. She just kept watching him, a small smile on those soft, lush lips. 

“May I?” he whispered. 

She nodded, her eyes gently closing in anticipation. 

And Sid kissed her. Her lips met his in acceptance, in warmth, in sensation that drowned them both. He sank into the kiss, his arms going around her as she burrowed into him, one hand clutching his hair and pulling him closer. 

He responded in kind until it felt like they were impossibly close, no space between them. Nothing in all his years of gadding about like a wandering tomcat had prepared him for this. For her. 

And then a wave crashed over them, wetting them and bringing them out of their dreamlike haze. 

Sid started to laugh even as he pulled a spluttering Dani to her feet. She leaned in close to him, shaking her wet hair like a little puppy. Droplets hit his face and his smile faded. One finger trailing her cheek, he captured her lips again. 

Bliss. This was bliss.

Short Excerpt from Deceitfully Yours by Andaleeb Wajid


‘You’re scared of butterflies?’ he asked in a low voice that sent her pulse racing.
She nodded. The moment was intact. He continued to explore her skin lightly, making her hunger for more. 
‘I’m terrified of them,’ she whispered. 
‘How odd,’ he whispered back. 
She wanted to tell him it wasn’t odd at all and that butterflies were just prettily coloured furry large insects that flew about and more people should be terrified of them. But she lost her train of thought as he gripped the back of her head gently and pulled her down.
Their lips were just a few breaths away from each other when he whispered. 
‘Butterflies are beautiful. Like you.’
She wondered if he could feel her stomach flip at his words.
‘They’re scary,’ she said. ‘But I can be scary if I want to.’
He smiled at her words and then his hand pressed her head closer and their lips touched.

Bryce Gregory and Hunter Whitloch – Whisper a Kiss


As the daughter of billionaire Egon Gregory, Bryce has it all, including men who want to marry her. She soon learns that her father’s billions makes her attractive to men who are looking for a way to get rich quick. One heartbreak is one too many,  and she develops a distrust toward men. His fraternity brothers started a company in their dorm room and want to take the company public. Hunter’s excited to help. He drafts the public offering and with Egon’s blessing prepares the deal. When the offering is scheduled to close, his brothers call and tell him the payout they’ll receive is less than the agreement.

Angry and humiliated, Hunter confronts Egon. Egon’s partner, Percy, is cheating Hunter’s fraternity brothers. Egon is enraged. How dare Hunter accuse Percy of underhanded dealings. Unless Hunter can prove Percy’s duplicity, he can leave.

Hunter can’t prove it. He’ll leave, but he’ll take Bryce with him.

Egon tells him that’s where he’s wrong. If he leaves the company, he’ll leave Bryce.

Hunter can’t walk away from Bryce.

About the Author:

A native of California, Laura Haley-McNeil spent her youth studying ballet and piano, though her favorite pastime was curling up with a good book. Without a clue as to how to write a book, she knew one day she would.
After college, she segued into the corporate world, but she never forgot her love for the arts and served on the board of two community orchestras. Finally realizing that the book she’d dreamt of writing wouldn’t write itself, she planted herself in front of her computer. She now immerses herself in the lives and loves of her characters in her romantic suspense and her contemporary romance novels. Many years later, she lived her own romantic novel when she married her piano teacher, the love of her life.
Though she and her husband have left warm California for cooler Colorado, they enjoy the outdoor life of hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and snow skiing. They satisfy their love of music by attending concerts and hanging out with their musician friends, but Laura still catches a few free moments when she can sneak off and read.
